Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Andrew M — 19 Sep 2015
This biopic of Brian Wilson's life covers from about the time he started working on Pet Sounds, until he was released from Landy's care, with a lot of the 70s and early 80s missing. The acting and music here, as expected, is fantastic.
However, the story and the editing/directing lacked any form of subtlety. It's hard to explain in words, but all the dialogue, and all the visuals were hammering in what you were supposed to be feeling at a particular time.
The story is told out in a semi-linear fashion, in that it jumps back from the 80s/90s to the 60s, but each time period is shown in order. It mostly works, although it seemed to me, "Good Vibrations" took weeks to record, not the months it actually did.
Still, I can't call this bad, and it's worth watching for the performances.
