Review of Luca (2021) by Sebastianali — 26 Jun 2021
Luca is not bad at all. The animation is excellent, the characters have their charm and the plot itself is more or less well told. What is the problem? I feel like there are things in the story that haven't been fully explored and exploited. It is said that sea monsters were always afraid of humans and that they are dangerous and that hunting sea monsters became common, however, we are never given an explanation as to why, in addition to the fact that the end of the film It seemed super forced, letting both protagonists go just for having won a race, even though they had a habit of hunting sea monsters, I feel like they should have worked that part a little better. Nor are we told much about Alberto's past. I feel like that's the main problem with the movie. Unlike other Pixar films of this style, which show us his own world with his own rules, Luca does not let us know much about this new world. I feel like having explored the past of various characters would have benefited a lot. In addition to the fact that the main villain is super generic at best, being bad just because.
I was somewhat hesitant between a 6.5 or a 7, but I think it is a 6 that it deserves.
