Review of Luca (2021) by Zodwraith — 12 May 2022
I thought Reya was showing the lack of inspiring writing coming out of Pixar these days but this is a new low. Rip off Little Mermaid, remove 95% of what made that a classic, add every coming of age story cliche, add 1 dimensional characters, wrap it in Nickelodeon level animation, add the worst written zero dimension cartoon bad guy in history, poke it full of massive plot holes to save money, and you're left with entertainment depth somewhere between a Scooby Doo episode and a mattress advertisement.
Usually you can count on Pixar to at least deliver on the animation and art but this looks like Disney gave them no budget. The pathetic attempts at any comic relief weren't even smile inducing, just stupid and forced. 15 years ago this would be straight to DVD instead of straight to streaming.
How anyone could seriously rate this above a 5/10 is beyond me. There's zero redeeming value beyond it's slightly more entertaining than an after school special. Not worth watching even for free. Go rewatch The Little Mermaid from before Disney sucked.
