Review of M3GAN (2022) by Jaymalcolm — 03 Jun 2023
I'm not a fan of horror films generally, but this is not really a horror film. It uses and abuses certain horror film tropes in the service of a semi-serious discussion of parenting issues and the potential of AI to warp our minds, especially the minds of young people.
I was very impressed with Allison Williams as the nerdy woman thrust into the mother-protector role against type. M3gan's animations were simply splendidly eerie. There are no buckets of blood and nobody sympathetic dies in this film.
It admirably marches a narrow path among genres such as sci-fi, dramedy, family failure, and semi-horror, with as many comedic swipes as thrills and chills. Definitely worth the price and the time to watch.
