Review of Malignant (2021) by Richardsayre — 30 Sep 2021
MALIGNANT feels like a classic, bloody, trippy as hell slasher ripped out of the '90s - right up until it's insane and wild third act tears the entire plot apart in the best way possible. It's a B-movie made by an A-list direct, and James Wan is a sick, evil genius for giving us this one.
The acting is fine throughout, but tonally the movie flirts from genre to genre and Wan handles it with the deft hand of a master. Part mystery, part crime, part slasher, mostly style over substance, but, man, that third act just **** rocks.
Definitely one of the best films of the year, it was too fun not to be. James Wan has cemented his spot in the Horror Hall of Fame.
