Review of Manhattan (1979) by Michael S — 30 May 2013
I really love Woody Allen. He reminds me of one of my uncles who currently lives and grew up in Brooklyn. I love the humor of this film. Woody has great timing and knows how to write a great screenplay. Being from the city, I love the cinematography; it really captures the city beautifully. Great decision filming in black and white.
The plot is a bit simple, but I see this movie as a love-letter to New York City itself and no matter who Woody dates in his films, his one true love will always be the city. Cast is good, with Meryl Streep in a great supporting role, and the dialogue is great. A bit boring and mundane at times, and it can also get a bit preachy (but I think that was on purpose). Solid film. Ranks up with "Annie Hall" as one of Woody's best.
