Review of Mary Poppins Returns (2018) by Dave M — 03 Jan 2019
When you end up grinning ear to ear almost the entire time, you know someone is doing something right. Lin-Manuel Miranda draws you in with that cheeky little grin and a convincing cockney accent. The music sores and wins over your heart and makes you feel all sorts of things.
Emily Blunt is a rock star and does justice to an iconic character. I personally thought there were a few moments that fell flat, mainly the entire animation sequence and the Meryl Streep sequence. They were trying to pay homage to the original movie, but both these scenes went a bit too over the top and some things in them not appropriate for the younger audience they try to aim for.
There were many great references to the original while standing well on its own two feet. And don't think we didn't catch the references to other Disney movies, too! A wonderful movies with a few 'cracks' underneath the polish.
