Review of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) by Mickticken — 04 Jan 2021
Unlike most action films and epics, nothing is dumbed down for the sake of convenience. Every minute detail is portrayed accurately and the atmosphere benefits greatly from this. Most of the movie revolves around the crew hanging out on the ship and it's refreshing to allow a film to just sit and exist.
Part of why this film could never be truly successful at the box office is it's greatest strengths. It's rare to see a movie so intelligent. I am blown away at the quality of the writing and characters being fully realized.
It's easy to put this off as slow and dull.
