Review of Midnight Run (1988) by Bill S — 21 Feb 2015
I've lost count of how many times I've seen this film: it was one that we watched over and over again when I was at boarding school. There are some very funny scenes, but also a strong storyline, and looking at it now (25 years later) I can admire how well crafted it is.
The music is excellent too; nowadays I mainly associate Danny Elfman with Tim Burton's films, but he demonstrates much more range here, going from poignant to jubilant while keeping the same leitmotif. The cast do a great job; although there are only two names on the poster, it's arguably more of an ensemble piece.
It is a product of its time: people are smoking in almost every scene, in places where it would be illegal nowadays (e.g. in restaurants and on public transport). There's also a lot of swearing in this film. I wouldn't say that it's essential to the plot, but if you are going to watch this film then don't bother watching it on TV because they'll make really obvious cuts and dubs.
