Review of Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) by Craig P — 02 Jul 2017
This felt like a poor man's Wedding Crashers. Not a great comedy by any stretch. Mike and David were actually quite insufferable and I kind of hated their characters (especially Adam Devine who was just so over the top it made me cringe.
I like Zack Efron but in this he was very unlikable.) Even when the intention was to ultimately fall in love with these two, it didn't really work. When you don't care if the "heroes" get the girls or not, that's a problem for me.
That being said I did laugh a lot more than I expected to and despite some very badly acted, awkward slapstick moments/attempts at gross out comedy that are meant for shock effect, but were mostly just stupid and again, the horrendous performance of Adam Devine, there were enough bright spots--mainly the chemistry between Anna Kendrick and Audrey Plaza who are a freakin riot as "The Dates"-- for me to recommend.
3 stars.
