Review of Modern Times (1936) by Afonso A — 26 May 2018
Ho hum. Chaplin really is Marmite. He works so hard but has none of the genius of Laurel and Hardy, who never forget the seriousness that underpins their comedy. This turgid comic riff on Metropolis is full of set-pieces designed to elicit applause, but laughter there is none.
