Review of Molly's Game (2017) by Liam H — 19 Feb 2018
This movie is thoroughly interesting all the way through however the ending I felt was a bit cheesy, flat and lazily written. How can I say that a movie based on a true story had a poor ending?...admittedly I know nothing about the real story of Molly Bloom.
However I do know that Hollywood is allowed to take huge poetic license even when it comes to true stories. This movie could have been a 5 stars rating for me but the ending was very subdued, predctable and cheesy and did not do the rest of the film justice.
I feel like they dropped the ball on this movie right at the last minute. The story of Molly's life provides inhernetly interesting subject matter. The relationship with her father is very intriguing.
The subject matter of court rooms and legal arguments is also an inherently interesting thing to watch. All throughout the movie the subject matter switches seamlessly between Molly's present day legal battle and her hugely interesting former life.
The movie is paced well and is easy to watch because of the subject matter. However the ending feels just a little Hollywood and too contrived at certain points to be true. Even if the circumstances are true, the writers did not do a good job of showcasing the end and did not do the story justice.
I am left with a feeling of dissapointment even though I can't deny the movie is entertaining and interesting. I doubt there is enough interest to return and watch this movie again after the subdued ending.
