- Drops you right into the action with little to no room for a breather.
- Ambitious plot simply decides to put 3 films worth of story into 2 hours?
Mortal Engines feels like the film Fran, Phillipa and peter wrote after playing Bioshock Infinite and on a purely visual level it completely grabbed me from the offset with the incredible first attack sequence where we see entire sections of a trading 'engine cluster' breaking apart and zipping off in all directions...so far so good, then the film seems to overwhelm with bizarre character choices as we are taken across the landscape to the great shield city for a final battle which feels almost undeserved as we don't yet have any emotions at stake with these characters yet... I felt an opportunity was missed here to spend more time in the world before it got blown apart by insanely detailed visual effects sequences.... The sets are just incredible and the cast feel somewhat wasted in their incredibly detailed costumes with their questionably obscure in world dialogue.... If nothing else Mortal Engines both soars to great heights of originality and suffers for trying to.
