Review of Mother (2016) by M C — 13 Jan 2018
I was riveted from beginning to end. "mother!" is a finely-honed amalgamation of Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" (as well as his "The Tenant"), and a big dash of Michael Winner's 1977 cult horror film, "The Sentinel.
" Without doubt this one's a real audience divider: The person I saw this with gave it a thumb's-down, saying it was "45 minutes too long." I, on the other hand, loved the pace, and was edgy and nervous throughout.
Yes, the denouement was a bit over-the-top; nonetheless, I applaud its audacity! If nothing else, Libatique's cinematography is a stunner. And, Jennifer Lawrence? WOAH!!! I've never been more impressed! (And I'm not a fan, to be honest.
) It's a pity she's been overlooked this awards season; it is quite a stunning performance! The entire ensemble was amazing, esp. (for me), Michelle Pfeiffer, whom I haven't seen in a movie in ages.
I will admit that I'm a very big admirer of director Aronofsky's film style; he did not disappoint! Again, visually, this one's a marvel of composition. My rating could possibly go up after another viewing.
... (By myself, this time.) ;).
