If you want to look up a definition of the word "pretencious" strive no more! Here we have a graphic example of one very pretencious movie, where its creator's ego is so profound that it simply cannot be ignored.
Don't get me wrong, as a creative director's work with all the visuals and actors in place, it's a fine piece of cinematography, but the general idea and all the thoghts are at the same time too shallow and trying too hard to be some kind of revelation. It's so much so, that in the end there are two general polar opposite points of view. One being "What a dispeakable piece of drug-addict bullsh*t I just saw?!" and the other: "This is simply genious!" Both of them seem to me as an exaggeration to say the least.
What we have as a result is in my opinion a mass-culture product that operates with abstractions, rather than specific well-written characters. What I mean is here we have an ideal poet-genious and an ideal muse, whose only interest is to worship and unconditionaly love her man, He writes an abstract state-of-the-art poem (?) that is so ideal and genious that it causes biblical consequences (literaly). But there is no real story. It's only Aronofsky's approuch to these eternal questions of the artist and the muse, the meaning of life through the art and so on, and so forth. "This is not the greatest song in the world. This is just a tribute.".
In the beginning there is hope for a real story and character development (the family of a dying fan line) but it leads nowhere and then there is nothing. You cannot possibly call a mother driven to the edge a character development. Moreover, the ending makes characters of a specific movie we just saw totally irrelevant. It was just an experiment, a tribute, a narcissistic discourse of a too self-involved artist. Less ego, more storytelling next time, mr Aronofsky.
