Review of Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) by Jacob B — 26 Dec 2018
We have read Kipling's Jungle Book many times in our home, and we have seen every version of Mowgli's story with very few glaring differences. There is also no sugar coating. This comes the closest to the actual source material in all its gritty detail.
There is violence, death, and many scary and disturbing situations, yet I loved seeing Baloo as the grumpy old teacher for once and Bagheera as the friendly guide. I also enjoyed seeing Mowgli's time in the village.
Yet after doing so well on much of the source material there was a gew glitches and add ins that were unnessesary, like the hunter, and tabaqui being a hyena instead of a jackal. I am sure we could have gotten more feel for the village people with just Messua and the elders, the priest and the cattle amd without the hunter and the shock value of the bjute scene.
I would have liked to see Rama and the herd work with Mowgli in the end but the elephants were a sufficient although confusing stand in. Also in the end Mowgli should have taken shere khan's pelt though to lay on Council Rock but given all the complaints over the violence in the film I suppose it would have been considered grotesque.
Overall we thought it was a really good movie, and the whole family enjoyed it.
