Review of Muppets Most Wanted (2014) by John D — 15 Apr 2018
I'm a little perplexed at the diconnect between critic and audience reviews for this film. I can make a number of assumptions, but the one that seems most persuasive to me at this point is that there are fewer amateur reviewers who have grown up with the powerful nostalgia of the Muppets.
To be sure, Muppets Most Wanted is far from a perfect film, It is a cotton candy construction, with a paper thin plot, easy jokes, and a heavy reliance on the charm of Henson's creatures. That said, what more do you need? I found the movie relaxing in a way.
The news today is so depressing, and our entertainment options tend to prioritize special effects and the need to overwhelm. Whatever happened to the simple pleasures of something like the Muppets? Well, here it is.
When Constantine (the nefarious Kermit lookalike) stared into the camera and growled "it's not easy being meeeaaannn" I knew exactly what I was in for, and my inner child just jumped up inquiring "where do I sign?".
