Review of Mystery Team (2009) by Jonathan M — 26 Feb 2012
While a fair amount of the jokes are either overdone or fall flat entirely, Mystery Team works as a masterful send off to Derrick Comedy as a whole, a bitersweet sendoff to the greatest comedy troop of my generation.
Each character is a thinly veiled representation of its respective performer; Donald Glover's Jason is the main centerpiece, often considered the most talented of the bunch. DC Pierson's Duncan is the intellectually superior secondary character, who realizes that he is entirely above the Mystery Team(Derrick)'s antics.
And Dominick Dierkes's Charlie is the tertiary, quiet one who is often underused, despite his vast amount of talent and usefulness. It's this type of meta-ness and self-deprecation that has always made Derrick Comedy one of my favorite things every (seriously, they're up there with water and breathing.
) All of Derrick's humor manages to make the concepts of vulnerability and weakness, silly and hilarious. Would "Jerry" be nearly as funny if you had never been publicly humiliated in a similar way like most have? Would the baseball field scene in Mystery Team be nearly as funny if you had never worried about the pressures of college? Derrick knows that the answer is no, and uses each of their brilliant comedic talents to make parodying them, a silly and fun ordeal.
