Review of Naina (2005) by Laurean L — 31 Mar 2008
This movie is a complete disaster for a remake. Previous parts (such as the grandmother) are played up as comedic. The romance between the girl and the doctor is also played up (common in Bollywood films, which doesn't HURT the story here, so it's not a bad point).
I also did like how the 'calligraphy scene' from the original movie was changed to a painting class, that was cool. The main problem with this movie is the actress. Her acting is incredibly poor and she freaks out and acts like a maniac over everything.
There is no clear concept of 'gradual' madness. The movie even slipped in a slight nod to Dark Water. The only saving factor of this movie is the backstory scene. I thought that was pretty dramatic, moving, and a great interpretation (from an Indian point of view).
The major ending scene was also fantastic and a unique twist. Sadly, these are the only two points of the movie worth watching...the rest at the beginning seems antagonizingly long and boring. :( Sad for a remake of a pretty neat movie.
