Review of Nanny (2022) by Tvjerry — 22 Dec 2022
Anna Diop plays a Senegalese immigrant, who's a nanny for a family in New York. Meanwhile, she has nightmares or some sort of unpleasant encounters that disturb here well being. This is the first feature for writer/director Nikyatu Jusu and she focuses on the nanny's challenges with racism, finances and the family she works for.
Although it may be promoted as a horror film, the malevolent events are only red herrings created by her mind's betrayal. The is basically a character study and Diop effectively relay's her character's challenges.
There are evocative moments that create some despair and a sensitive portrayal at the core, but the film ultimately lacks much real punch.
