Review of Nanook of the North (1922) by Shaun M — 28 Oct 2010
The interesting thing about silent films is that you can talk through them without missing anything. This one inspired a lot of conversation! I know so little about Eskimos. I was very aware that all the explanations and descriptions were written from a non-Eskimo perspective and I wondered how accurate they were, or if the director just made assumptions based on his own interpretations of the situation.
The fact that this film was made so long ago just made it more interesting, because we were not just looking at a very unfamiliar culture, but a very unfamiliar time as well.
