Review of Nights of Cabiria (1957) by David L — 27 Feb 2010
One of the most extraordinary performances by an actor in movie history is displayed by Gulietta Massina. Director and real life husband Fellini pushes the lead to be a little bit Chaplin and a vast array of what makes us human. The dimensions of this unusually expressive actress were mesmerizing to me.
The story is about a prostitute in Italy who is looking for a better life and the meaning of life. Through a series of interesting events in the life of Cabiria, we are brought along in the search. Not many films take you on the search for the meaning of life, but Fellini made the reflective journey one of the most searing and fascinating lessons I have had the joy to experience.
I have never fallen in love with a character before as I have for Cabiria. Her performance is raw and with endless range. Her wonderfully expressive face is a gift.
The last few minutes of this film are some of the most haunting and brilliant moments of cinema. It unraveled me to the core. Life has its cruel jokes, and when they are played on you, you can resign or embrace the jest. This is Fellini's masterpiece.
