Review of No Strings Attached (2011) by Matt H — 21 Jul 2014
These type of movies heavily rely on the charisma of the actors involved since the stories usually suck; the problem with this film is that Ashton Kutcher has problems acting even in such light crap as this.
He has some hilarious line delivery. Natalie Portman is adequate but has no help from her movie partner. The plot is silly as usual, but the one thing that could have been kind of interesting was the role reversal for this type of movie - it's Portman's character who was to "win back" the "heartbroken" Kutcher's character.
This could have worked better in a better movie (or at least without Kutcher). The easy comparison with this movie is Friends With Benefits - a romantic comedy superior to No Strings in every way. Justin Timberlake has been acting for a lesser time than Kutcher, but he already has more talent and natural charisma than Kutcher can ever look to have.
Timberlake and Kunis were able to complement each other in their roles, but Portman has a huge black hole she can't possible fill on her own.
