Review of Nope (2022) by Theredsky — 10 Aug 2022

My score for Nope is kind of in flux right now. It’s sitting at a 7 but I really want to give it an 8 however I need to watch the movie again before I do that so 7 for now. Nope is a weird film for me.

2/3rd’s of this movie is insanely good but the last 30 minutes are just kind of underwhelming to me. I’m hoping on rewatch that my thoughts will change. The ending only feels underwhelming because it felt somewhat less dramatic than the rest of the film.

The whole movie for the first 2/3rds is creepy and downright terrifying at points and that isn’t there for the 3rd act. That’s really my major critique but since it’s the climax of the movie it does stick out like a sore thumb to me.

Like I said though, the rest of the movie is insanely good. It’s scary at points and just downright disturbing in all the ways a horror movie should be. Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya are amazing in this and I hope to see more great performances from them in the future.

Their characters are really fun to watch and get behind as they are just like us. Humans are naturally drawn to the unknown and sometimes we do whatever is necessary to try and capture it to show the world.

The Gordy segments can seem a little confusing as to what they mean but not only are they downright scary and terrifying but it really adds to one of the film’s messages about not underestimating a wild animal as you don’t know how they will react regardless of how much you try to train them.

The technical aspects of this film are pretty amazing across the board. The visual effects, sound design, cinematography, and music are all some of the best of the year and are definitely worth the price of admission.

While I’m still a little unsure about the ending I still think that you should go see this film as soon as possible for everything else that I mentioned.
