Review of One Day (2011) by Floridadino — 07 Mar 2022
Having read the book this is based on, I can honestly say this is not as good as the book, but that's because the book is excellent. Films rarely live up to their source material, and One Day is no different.
However, taken on its own merits, it's a solidly enjoyable film. The two leads are very good (admittedly Anne Hathaway's English accent is a tad uneven) and have excellent chemistry, the film is shot well, and I think David Nicholls managed to keep the essence of his book intact with his screenplay.
Although it doesn't quite manage the emotional gut punch the book does, it still manages to land a partial one, and you never feel shortchanged. The soundtrack, and the beautiful themes by Rachel Portman, are superb.
Recommended.
