Review of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) by Laura%20 Z — 23 May 2018
I rate the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" directed by Milos Forman and produced in 1975 three out of five stars based on three criteria including how well the movie followed the book, the emotional connection between audience and characters, and the soundtrack.
The first criterion I used was how well the movie followed the events of the book. In this category, I give the movie four stars because the movie did follow the same plot and the characters generally have the right personality and role. However, the movie did skip some events that occured in the book that I would have liked to have seen in the movie. For example, I was disappointed that the narrator of the book, Chief Bromden, was absent in several major events in the movie. Although the events of the movie do play a vital role in its quality, the underlying emotion that the audience feels during the event is also important. The second criterion I used was how well the movie developed an emotional connection between the audience and characters. In this category, I give the movie two-and-a-half stars. The book goes into detail to describe several scenes from Chief Bromden's past and to explain the reasons that several of the patients are at the hospital, but the movie almost completely excludes all of these allusions into the patients' lives. This leaves the audience with an almost apathetic feeling toward the characters and the outcome of the plot. Another element of the movie that plays a major role in the audience's emotional experience is the music and noise overlying the events. The third criterion that I used was the effectiveness of the soundtrack. In this category, I give the movie two-and-a-half stars. The soundtrack did not enhance the emotional experience of the movie at all. The majority of the soundtrack did not make sense. Many of the scenes were accompanied by music that did not match its emotional content or that was strange and confusing because it did not clearly convey an emotion at all. Most of the soundtrack served as a distraction because of its lack of compatibility with the visual events of the movie.
I determined the overall movie rating by averaging the ratings from all 3 criteria. Therefore my overall rating for the movie, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" directed by Milos Forman, is three out of five stars based on my ratings of how well the movie followed the book, the emotional connection between the audience and the characters, and the soundtrack of the movie.
