Review of Open Range (2003) by Kevin M — 03 Jan 2010
Delightfully authentic take on the classic Western theme, with Costner as the polar opposite of his role as Silverado's Jake in a story he directs as well. This film is serious and brutally honest.
A parable of honor and character in which the good guys grimly go about the business of doing what's got to be done. The Big Sky scenery is breathtaking, the period look is perfect, and the climactic gunfight is quite possibly the best that's even been put on film.
Duvall offers up a stunning performance that he describes, along with Lonesome Dove and the underappreciated Broken Trail, as his greatest work. A unique contribution to the genre.
