Review of OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009) by John P — 30 Jan 2012
I found this sequel to the French James Bond spoof OSS 117 Cairo Nest of Spies a tad bit more enjoyable than the first. What sells these movies are two things... Director Michel Hazanavicius has a definite knack for authenticity in the homage to 60's spies films.
If one did not better, you would believe you were watching a genuine movie made in the 60's. It is truly skillful. Also, Jean Dujardin as OSS 117. It is hard for you to take your eyes off his performance.
You really believe him to be this buffoon spy. Both will probably win Oscars for The Artist, and deservedly so. However, to watch their early work, one can see, a few years before the award winning collaboration, that excellence was coming.
This will be compared to Austin Powers and The Pink Panther films. Mike Myers was funny, but lacks Dujardin's subtlety and acting skills. Peter Sellars is genius, but Clousseau is almost too brain dead to be taken seriously.
I hope, I truly do, they make another OSS 117.
