Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Gregory G — 10 May 2014
In Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight," George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez have a dynamic charisma and sexual chemistry of movie stars from an earlier era - the kind that is largely missing in contemporary movies.
Intelligently adapted by Scott Frank from Elmore Leonard's slick and entertaining novel, a bank robber (George Clooney) tries for one more score while getting involved romantically with a federal marshal (Jennifer Lopez) who is in pursuit of him.
This is a well crafted, effortless entertainment with the charm and wit of Stanley Donen's "Charade." Soderbergh succeeded as the first director to rein in Clooney's mannerisms. Kudos to the inventive editing by Anne V.
Coates. The impressive cast includes Ving Rhames, Albert Brooks, Steve Zahn, Catherine Keener, Dennis Farina, Don Cheadle, Isaiah Washington, with cameos by Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson.
