Review of Peter Rabbit (2018) by Joseph J — 21 Mar 2018
I wanted to like this film and felt it would be fun but I just found it fairly crass and annoying. There are some good bits of slapstick humour and a few good puns. But what really ground my gears was James Corden and his constant loudness and overbearingness.
The original books (as far as I can remember from my bunny years) were pretty alright and genteel. But I felt this was written by a London ghetto creature imposing themselves on the countryside. Like there was a point where all these animals go into the house, party and trash the place. And I just felt NO. This isn't respectful to the original at all and its not fun.
Then another scene where the sweet singing sparrows keep falling out the sky or are hit by catapults by the bunnies. And it was just like no, you're ruining the spirit of this!
The annoying thing is it was constant action, constant James Cordon being James Cordon. It did have some good points and was funny in places. On the whole I enjoyed it, but I want to cork James Cordon's mouth with a big fat carrot and rewrite the script so it was a bit more nuanced and 3-dimensional.
