Review of Please Give (2010) by James D — 14 Jul 2010
Very rarely do you get a great director at there peak go so under the radar, but Nicole Holofcener just can not cut a break. She is the best female director alive today and yet no one is seeing her films.
At times darkly funny and at times completely heartbreaking, this film takes middle class guilt, and unhappiness and creates one of the greatest satires I've seen in a long time. The acting was superb all the way around especially Amanda Peet who gives one of the best performances of the year, I truly hope she gets a supporting actress nod for this film.
The dialog is incredibly realistic and performed perfectly. The plot is incredibly complicated but never did you feel overwhelmed or bored, it was not overwritten and the characters were perfectly complicated.
The direction was never over the top and knew when to get out of the characters way. And the ending, perfectly hypocritical, one of the best movies I 've seen this year.
