Review of Pollock (2000) by Phazel45 — 27 Jun 2013
Mesmerizing. Although I'm an art lover, Pollock was not one of my favorites. After watching the film, I finally "get" him. Ed Harris has done an amazing job as acting and directing. I absolutely believed I was watching Pollock himself.
Marcia Gay Harden is wonderful as his wife, Lee Krasner. The acting and directing throughout is superb. Pollock sober was a sweetheart; Pollock drunk was a monster. Unfortunately, the monster prevailed.
The final scene, in which an extremely intoxicated Pollock drives his car faster and faster, despite the pleas and screams of his girlfriend and her friend, was compelling. Pollock is obviously released from all his pain, and in a dream-like trance crashes the car, and one understands that he has perished.
That scene is distressingly attractive, making his death seem like Nirvana instead of the sordid reality. (His girlfriend survives, although her friend is killed, but the film shows us nothing after the car crashes.
) This may be one of the best films I have ever seen.
