Review of Pride & Prejudice (2005) by Panayiota K — 25 Dec 2018
Im disappointed. I came across this movie while trying to find something emotionally romantically satisfying. Time period or not, theres just nothing romantic or emotionally about a bunch of giggly girls being desperately thrown at a bunch of entitled snobs who already get anything they want and then getting married with no quality time spent.
There were no real conflicts that kept me interested, I literally fell asleep halfway through and forced myself to finish it the next day hoping I might have just been tired. No real obstacles are keeping them apart up until the end, they knew each others upbringing before they met so that wasnt convincing and the all of these reasons make the romance feal unearned.
I looked for suspense but got a bunch of beautiful but pointless shots, and giggling during the moments where I thought things were getting serious. Im a Huge Beauty and The Beast fan so maybe I went wrong by looking for potentially dangerous confrontations, bad guys, and/or real unfolding drama that make the romance that much more gratifying.
It may also be that I subconsciously long for a more realistic scenario in todays day in time where the guy has the hardest time finding romance in a world full of beautiful and rejecting superficial woman.
As beautiful as the music was, it was entirely too soft and gentle for too long with the piano which kept everything dull. I generally look for a full on beautiful but dynamic orchestra to be the foundation of romantic movies.
A good example would be the theme song in an old classic called The Unbrellas of Cherbourg, and even Randy Edelmans scores in movies that have little or no focus on romance but where his scores give me a consistantly satisfying romantic charm throughout his movies (e.
G. Kindergarten Cop, The Mask, The Big Green). Cinematography is excellent and Kiera is beautiful, but the movie is entirely too dull and not worth watching a second time.
