Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Viktor B — 22 Mar 2014
A grim and well acted deconstruction of Confucian values from within the land where it was born. This scathing assault on patriarchy and tight social order is effective, emotionally involving, and heart wrenching.
Even characters with a despicable side often come off as sympathetic in their own ways and it only serves to improve the film. This is one of the films that make the case for motion picture being a form of high art.
