Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by David L — 23 Jun 2007
Is there any justice in old systems and repressive values? Zhang Yimou's masterful study of a family compound is both allegorical and realistically brutal, one of the most beautiful and horrifying experiences ever shot on film.
Certainly the director's most stunning achievement, if not a landmark in contemporary cinema itself.
