Review of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) by Fiona C — 28 Dec 2018
I have a lot of unanswered questions after watching this movie but not in a good way. Such as where did the virus go? Why is it okay for Venelope to be insecure but total unbelievable if Ralph has any? Also why are we teaching children that running away from your problems is okay?
First of all I like to explain why I enjoyed the movie. The way the animators portrayed the Internet is very well done. I also enjoy the characters inside the internets Design. Like the character named Yes, her whole look was very on trend and I enjoyed her role in the plot of the movie. Also the way Disney and the Princesses were very funny and well done.
Although as a feminist I would like to point out the difference between "women empowerment" and putting down males to make females feel better. I was all for the joke about a man coming to save the princesses, however I felt as though the entire movie was focused on putting down Ralph for being insecure. Yes his relationship with Venelope wasn't healthy but they should have talked about it in a way that actually gave Ralph a choice to accept her decision. When someone is being crushed by a virus monster of corse they will say "it's fine" for her to stay in a terriably dangerous game she's only been in once, because at that point there's no other option. Ralph's emotions should have been seen as important in this movie however they were stomped all over by big female leads. The only character that actually talked to Ralph on an emotionally healthy level was Yes, when he was reading the comments under his videos. We needed a wholesome seen like that between him and Venelope which we just didn't receive.
As for Venelope, I love her character but not in this movie. She taught kids it's okay to run away from your problems and jump to quick solutions because they seem fun and different. If Veneolpe lives with the mindset of needing a "rush" and something new and exciting she's going to get bored of every new game she enters until she has no where new to turn. Nothing will ever be enough for her, which is where the issue of teaching kids when you should stop looking outside for things to deal with your inner issues. Am I the only one who thinks Venelope is gonna turn to drugs in her new game to look for a "rush" or is that just me. Overall there are other ways this movie could have been done and I just think the storyline wasn't very child appropriate.
