The battles are great and there are some truly magnificent shots, but it's a "bloated epic that ranks in the bottom half of Kurosawa's ... body of work." Shakespeare and Kurosawa fans will dig it.
Color and clarity are welcome changes from Seven Samurai and Rashomon, but the 74 year old Akira still has a penchant for overlong takes. An hour too long.
