Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Simon G — 11 Jul 2018
Good but flawed movie. Generally solid story, but without any specific revelations or unexpected turns.
Numerous eastern eggs were nice, but unfortunately not used in any meaningful manner, nor they were spread particularly well. While movie CGI was plentiful, challenges were kinda shallow, didnt feel like real game challenge.
Whole romantic part were either completely unnecessary or, at the very least, should not have such significant part of the movie. Considering general theme it fit like a saddle on a donkey.
Bad guy felt a bit cartoonish, lacking depth or any real presence or any but most superficial motivation. Protagonists unfortunately suffered from same problems, often figuring out things completely out of the blue(in general multiple things happened for no apaprent reason, as if writers went with "what if we were to put this here for no particular reason"), and making right decisions based on literally nothing. Their moral dilemmas felt inflated and pointless, lacking any connection to alleged reality of movie world.
Moderately good movie, good watch, but nothing particularly notable to mention.
