Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Adam K — 16 Aug 2018
The book was better with much of the story, but not all of it. I'm not suggesting that's a surprise and I'm also not suggesting the book was 5 star worthy. I liked the movie version of Art3mis better than the book version. Wade was better in the book. Where Spielberg failed is in not really capturing the nerdiness of Wade. When Art3mis proclaims his expertise at '80's nostalgia in the movie, it's a bit of a surprise. The book pounds that into the reader.
The one theme Spielberg attempted, weakly, to promote here is the idea that you can't tell what someone is like by their avatar. And then steps all over it by making all the heroes match their avatars in character if not in appearance. to be fair, the book fails here also.
