Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Craig F — 22 Sep 2018
A nerd's wet dream, 'Ready Player One' captures a lot of that old-school Steven Spielberg magic and is full of Easter Eggs and references to 80's and 90's pop culture (and more than a few from modern times, too), so many that you'll never catch them all in one viewing.
But more than that, the visuals are great and the story is inspirational, imparting timely messages to its audience with the final one being particularly important. The only fault - and it's a big one, unfortunately - is the lack of emotional heft that you'd expect from the director, meaning it doesn't quite have that sentimental punch that makes it feel meaningful.
Nevertheless, that doesn't mean it isn't a wildly entertaining and nostalgic bag of fun.
