Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Chris G — 14 Dec 2018
Director Steven Spielberg take on the novel by Ernest Cline, about a world gone awry and our society finding solace in a virtual world where the world "impossible" does not exist. To be honest, the chances of this becoming reality are very very plausible so the timing of this film is good.... and fun.
A visual mash up of all things pop culture, this film is a total assault on the eyes and ears , with incredible visuals and AMAZING sound design and eeing this in IMAX 3D was totally necessary. The entirety of the movie takes advantage of its $175 million dollar budget, with color, digital characters, environments and references that will put a huge smile on your face.
The core of the story comes down to our Slumdog type of hero in Wade Watts, who you're both cheering for to find his way in the world - both reality and in the OASIS. Tye Sheridan gets his first star role and I gotta say, does a good job carrying the film. His romance with Artemis , played by Olivia Cooke, is both nieve and heartwarming especially considering the digital platform in which they meet. As their relationship blossoms in the OASIS, it takes what would be a 1980s high school comedy romance movie ala "The Breakfast Club" or "Sixteen Candles" and injects it into exciting environments that grab your attention.
Grade : B +.
