Having read the book, I knew this would be a difficult one to translate to the screen, and I'm afraid that even Spielberg couldn't touch the depth of the story line or character development from the book.
In fact, without having read the book, I can't imagine grasping who the characters were or what was going on. The entire storyline was changed (I guess to create the opportunity for more human appearances vs avatar - in the book, you don't meet the humans behind the avatars until the end.
) I will say the special effects were amazing, and I can't imagine the film not winning awards in that category. All of the characters were also appealing - it was well cast and acted. But the film was really all action and not much on the story side.
I ended up bored and wishing it would end.
