Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Scot C — 16 Apr 2018

There are some uh...questionable moments. A case in point, even without having heard of certain actors or knowing what they look like, the poster spoils what a few characters look like in real life outside of the OASIS.

There are also discussions to be had regarding how people spend more time in virtual reality than they do in the real world. What exactly happened to lead to Earth being crap? It doesn't look dystopian to me.

But in all fairness, I thought Ready Player One was good. It has a great sense of originality, which is saying a lot since the movie is built off of pop culture references. There's King Kong, the Iron Giant and even Tron: Legacy among others.

The visuals are amazing, this might possibly be the most gorgeous film to look at this year. The set pieces are quite good, which makes me wish more and more that OASIS was real. After all, who wouldn't want to weaponize Chucky? And the sweet sweet nostalgia.

It says a lot about a movie's quality when a nostalgia-based film based off of a book does it better than a Japanese video game company who're so desparate to please their fanbase, they add the younger version of a blue hedgehog to the recent 3D game despite his levels being nothing more than filler.

Although, I don't think Sonic Forces is that bad. Ben Mendelsohn is compelling as the bad guy, you really root against him and hope he gets his comeuppance. I liked T.J. Miller as Boba Fett-esque "villain for hire".

While I was worried that I wouldn't like Ready Player One, seeing as how a favourite YouTuber of mine didn't like it the second time around whilst his girlfriend didn't like it, I turned out okay.

Maybe it's because of her having read the book? Considering my attitude towards Percy Jackson's infidelity to the source material whilst still thinking it was generally okay, I don't blame them.
