Review of Ready Player One (2018) by José Carlos Á — 07 Apr 2018
Due to its committed cast and its tons of references to pop culture, "Ready Player One" seemed fated to be one of the highlights of 2018. However, poor character development and narrative clichés worsen a narrative with pace problems; the use of visual effects turns from outstanding to abusive and tiresome the more the film progresses; and lastly, the analysis on pop culture and its fans as well as Virtual Realities, is full of generalizations and stereotypes that, despite the film's message to find a balance between the real and virtual worlds, do not help to integrate these fans into society but to isolate them even more.
For these reasons, "Ready Player One" will win pop culture fans' hearts immediately; other audiences might find only a midly entertaining sci-fi action film.
