Review of Red Army (2014) by Private U — 04 Oct 2014
It's a great film, but it does seem to play fast and loose with some facts about Russian hockey success against the NHL, completely omitting any mention of losses of any kind, apart from the US Olympic "miracle on ice". Yes, they were fantastic, but our best did beat them on many occasions as well. It's just not as black and white. A few scenes actually include highlights of Russian players in the NHL, which on closer inspection, are Canadians, not Russians (Yzerman's famous overtime top shelf slap shot goal against Colorado, for instance). And what was that Canadian team wearing blue that the Russians defeated? I don't recall any blue Team Canada.
That said, still a really great film. Well directed and great footage and the interviews are funny, charming and moving. Not just for hockey fans.
