Review of Room (2015) by Mike B — 25 May 2018
The film takes surprising turns and keeps the viewer rapt until the very end. The last half of the film explores the question of what is a good parent in very incisive ways, asking the nuture/nature question out loud and with a vengeance.
I was deeply moved by the story and thought about it often the next day. It's a film that, in other hands, would have become a thriller. But in Abrahamson's capable hands (and with incredible performances), it stays on task and is even sweet at times.
Wonderful little touches. The theme of the film has to do with what we take for granted -- how much of interest and value exist in a single microsphere. The film also, I think, probes the depth of parental love, and even how our culture can be at odds with such love.
The film is alive -- it breathes. The child actor (Jason Tremblay) is incredible to watch and so absolutely in character --- he's a genius.
