Review of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1991) by Michael T — 15 Jul 2008
Tom Stoppard directed this big screen adaptation of his existentialist comedy set against the backdrop of the Bard's play, HAMLET. Gary Oldman and Tim Roth are cast as Hamlet's old school chums, RosenCrantz and Guildenstern, but even they are not sure who is who.
They wander around Elsinore wondering why they were sent for, who they are, and what is going on. Richard Dreyfuss is great as the Player King, who knows more about what is going on than anyone else. Oldman and Roth are, as usual, very good in their roles and it is great to hear them both speak with their native English accents.
