Review of Rules Don't Apply (2016) by Doc G — 22 Aug 2017
Warren Beatty never ceases to amaze with his ability to write a substantial piece of art and history combined. This star studded cast is led by Beatty and two lesser known actors who are clearly coming into their own, Lilly Collins (daughter of famed singer Phil),is brilliant as Marlina Mabrey, a composite character, ostensibly, of all of the actresses rumored to have bedded and possibly fathered children with Hughes.
She handles the role so sensitively while making it so believable that one could easily come away with believing the story in full. Meanwhile, Alden Ehrenreich, hits it out of the park in his role as Hughes confidante and Mabrey(Collins) love interest.
The chemistry between the two is undeniable and when combined with the superb acting and screen play of Beatty, it's hard to understand why this review isn't in the 80's, at least. Perhaps we have lost touch with what makes good filmmaking, preferring the immediate gratification and pandering to our senses of a Michael Bay blockbuster.
