Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Jillian L — 06 Nov 2014
I'm not going to lie, I watched this solely for Marion Cotillard. And she didn't disappoint. The way you see her character recover from an accident of that kind of magnitude is amazing to watch.
Matthias Schoenaerts, her other co-star is also quite good in his storyline. But this is the problem we hit. This is basically two different movies. The only thing in common is the two main characters and when they interact with each other.
And that, unfortunately, is where this one lost me. Each storyline is interesting, but are completely different. Cotillard's is about the accident and recovering from it, and Schoenaerts' is about a man who is completely lost in the world, trying to deal being a single father to his young son.
And because they are both so different, you feel like you never get enough of either. They hit emotional climaxes that make sense logically, but aren't earned because we hadn't seen enough previously.
So, while the acting is good, it doesn't quite get there story wise.
