Review of Scarlet Diva (2000) by William B — 26 Mar 2008
I should have taken it as a bad omen that Scarlet Diva had been (incorrectly) filed under the Adult section at my local video store, but having seen The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things - Asia Argento's other directorial effort - I decided to give the film a go, in spite of its somewhat mixed reviews.
The first thing that can be said about Scarlet Diva is that it is a brash work - not unlike The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things - but likewise the flaws of the later film are only more evident here.
That is to say Scarlet Diva is a narcissistic film to say the least, and unlike in The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, I didn't find Argento impressive enough to make her Vincent Gallo-like self-indulgence worthwhile.
There are some clever scenes and ideas peppered throughout Scarlet Diva, but for the most part its a shock-for-shock's-sake excursion of drugs and sex that never really amounts to very much more than an 'oh poor me' statement from the daughter of horror maestro Dario Argento.
